Fracking facts

This is not a rural pursuit, it’s an industrial process.

To produce the amount of gas the government wants for the ‘Northern Powerstation’ will need thousands of wells across northern England and will cover most of North Yorkshire.

Virtually the whole of Ryedale is now licensed by the Conservative government for unconventional gas exploitation (fracking).

Approximately 4 million gallons of fresh water are needed to frack each well.

Millions of gallons of contaminated waste water produced by each well will have to be transported away and treated. Where and how?

We are promised Gold Standard Regulation, but not Gold Standard Enforcement of regulations.

Similar to VW, banks, tobacco and asbestos industries, can they be trusted to self-regulate safely?

There will be tens of thousands of extra HGV journeys on our congested trunk roads and rural country lanes to service this industry. Accidents and damage will increase proportionately.

When gas is burned, it produces carbon dioxide and therefore contributes to man-made climate change.

Academic studies show that currently, between 4-8% of fracked gas (methane) escapes. In the first two decades after its release, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.
